Our Protocols

The EcoCertified® Protocol is a living document, revised annually by the IPM Institute to reflect the best available scientific methods for growing fruit in our region.

Growers meet regularly with Red Tomato, IPM consultants and crop specialists, extension agents, scientists, and other growers to share knowledge and adapt practices based on new research and real-world experience. We monitor current research on health and environmental effects and adapt the protocol to respond to public concerns.

Core Protocol Areas

The EcoCertified® Core Protocol is extensive, covering seven essential areas of farm practices:

Operations, Food Safety and Management

Ensuring safe, efficient farm operations that protect workers and consumers

Ecosystem and Water Conservation

Protecting natural resources and maintaining healthy farm ecosystems

Orchard Floor Enhancement

Using sustainable ground management to limit weeds and protect pollinators

Soil Health

Building healthy soils that support strong trees and nutrient-rich fruit

Pest Management and Pesticide Risk Reduction

Using advanced IPM strategies that minimize chemical interventions

Pollinator Protection and Enhancement

Creating environments where bees and other pollinators thrive

Energy and Waste Management

Reducing environmental impact through responsible resource use

Verification and Oversight

To qualify as EcoCertified®, growers must meet rigorous production standards that ensure consistent, environmentally responsible practices. The growing protocol, audits, and certification are managed by our third-party partner, the IPM Institute of North America, with annual records audits and on-farm inspections every three years conducted by independent inspectors.

Continuous Improvement

The protocol is reviewed and updated annually to incorporate:

  • Latest scientific research
  • Grower experience and innovation
  • New environmental challenges
  • Evolving best practices
