Green’s Fruit Farm: A 4th-Generation Pennsylvania Orchard Growing for the Future
Family farming, fresh apples, and EcoCertified® sustainable practices in Elysburg, PA.
Bobby and Sara Hricko, the husband-and-wife team behind Green’s Fruit Farm, are fourth-generation family farmers in Elysburg, Pennsylvania. The nearly 100-acre farm was first purchased in 1944 by Bobby’s great-grandfather, Robert Green, and has been passed down through each generation, shaped by decades of care, hard work, and a deep connection to the land.
Located in one of Pennsylvania’s prime regions for growing tree fruit, the farm has long produced high-quality apples and other fruit. While earlier generations primarily sold to packing companies, Bobby and Sara are building a more direct connection to their community through their farm store, website, local retailers, and farmers markets.
Today, Green’s Fruit Farm grows a wide variety of fruit, including more than 35 apple varieties, along with handcrafted jellies, fruit butters, and spreads made right on the farm.

Rebuilding and Reimagining the Farm
For Bobby and Sara, who met at Penn State while earning degrees in plant science, taking over the family farm was both exciting and challenging. They inherited a strong foundation but knew they had work to do to modernize and sustain the business.
“It’s kind of like somebody gave us a car and the frame is spotless, but the engine is blown… We got a good deal and a nice car with a good frame, but we need to figure out how to rebuild the engine in order to actually use it… but now it’s running and we’re on the road.”
— Bobby Hricko
And even the best vehicle would require some maintenance to last over 80 years. Luckily, Bobby is just as excited researching a new piece of cutting-edge farm equipment as he is running down to the hardware store and finding a way to repurpose their old scrap pile. It’s the team’s curiosity and openness to innovation that keeps them going.

Sustainable Farming and EcoCertified® Commitment
Sustainability is at the core of Green’s Fruit Farm. Drawing on their education and ongoing partnership with Penn State Extension, Bobby and Sara have prioritized environmentally responsible growing practices from the start.
In 2021, after learning about the EcoCertified® fruit program from another Pennsylvania orchard, they connected with Red Tomato and quickly pursued EcoCertification. While certification can often take years, their existing practices aligned so closely with the program that they were able to become EcoCertified® within their first year.
Using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, the farm has reduced insecticide use in their orchards by 90%, supporting healthier ecosystems, safer working conditions, and more sustainable fruit production.
Growing for Family, Community, and the Future
As both farmers and parents of three young children, Bobby and Sara are deeply invested in the future of their farm and their community. Their work goes beyond growing fruit. They are committed to producing healthy food, strengthening local food systems, and caring for the land for generations to come.
At Green’s Fruit Farm, that means continuing a family legacy while building something new, a resilient, sustainable orchard that feeds both people and place.
