Meet Our Farmers

EcoCertified® and Local Growers

Family farms growing food that’s good for you, the land, and our communities

Everything we do starts with the local farmers who partner with the Red Tomato food hub.

Red Tomato works with small and mid-sized farms in nine Northeastern states. Our network of local farmers operates orchards and vegetable farms from Pennsylvania to Maine. Most of our local farmers are also EcoCertified®, meaning they produce sustainable produce following methods that fit the region. Some of our local farmers are new to their land and some have been working the land for generations. All of our growers have one thing in common: a dedication to the land and great produce.

The idea of “doing right” by farmers and farm workers is core to our organization, and that includes making sure our farmers are paid a fair price for their produce. There is no formula for fair pricing in produce. In addition to tracking market trends and buyer requests, we focus on what we call the “dignity deal.” Our first question is, “How much would you like to see this product sell for?” And then: “How low can we go without compromising your dignity?” That’s it. The farmer is with us from the start, not waiting on the farm for us to tell them what they’ll receive. As a marketing and distribution food hub, this is a major way we are working from within the system to make it more equitable for small and local farmers.
